Sustainable Mobility

High-speed trains are rightly considered to be the most environmentally-friendly mode of transport, which use the least amount of energy.

> Very low level of greenhouse gas emissions
> Highly energy-efficient
> Reduced levels of atmospheric pollution
> High safety level
> Takes up a limited amount of space

The greenest way to travel in Europe

For the same European journey, a high-speed train emits considerably less CO2 than an airplane.
A study carried out in Great Britain has shown that flights between London-Paris and London-Brussels generate between 8 and 11 times more CO2 emissions than the Eurostar train does for these same journeys.

According to data supplied by the journey comparison tool, ‘EcoComparateur’ developed by www.voyages-sncf.com, a journey between Paris and Brussels generates, on average, approx. 62 kg of CO2 when travelling by car, 45 kg by plane and only 10kg when completed on a Thalys train.

On a journey from Paris to Frankfurt, an average of approx. 116 kg of CO2 is emitted per passenger when travelling by car, 67 kg by plane and 17 kg on an InterCity Express.

By encouraging the substitution of air and road travel by rail (as journey times are continuously reduced, the market share is growing) and by reducing the levels of pollution created, high-speed rail combines excellent performance with environmental protection.

By travelling with Railteam, you are making a responsible and environmentally friendly choice.

Did you know?

> On main European journeys, high-speed trains generate between 4 and 40 times less CO2 per passenger than other modes of transport.
> Travelling by rail uses 2 to 3 times less energy than journeys by road.
> A high-speed railway line takes up half as much space as a motorway.

Railteam’s member companies are currently developing their own Sustainable Development programmes with a view to becoming even more environmentally-friendly.
