Environmental protection and sustainability are of paramount to the Railteam Alliance. This is why all members constantly work on new developments to protect the environment.
Europe by train – making sustainable and ecological sense
While high-tech trains whisk you through Europe’s cutting-edge rail network, engineers and technicians work tirelessly to further reduce CO2 emissions. After all, only those who search for new standards with constant and complete dedication are really committed to ensuring sustainable transport.
High-speed train journeys cause up to 90% less CO2 emissions than journeys with comparable modes of transport. Trains from Railteam member companies are powered by electricity, and therefore do not emit any CO2 during the journey. The volume of CO2 emissions ultimately caused by rail transport depends on how that electricity is generated. The more renewable energy sources used by the countries in which Railteam is represented, the more emissions are reduced.
The Railteam Alliance is deeply aware of the relevance of sustainability and has established its own goals. By the year 2020, greenhouse gas emissions should be reduced by 30% in comparison to 1990.
But this is not all: by converting the trains’ braking energy into electricity and feeding it back into the overhead lines, modern trains on some Railteam routes can even generate energy, which can then be used by other trains.
Railteam works continuously to increase the capacity of the high-speed rail network and extend its routes. After all, investment in the Alliance network means shorter travelling times, better and more frequent connections and improved sustainability. And this not only benefits the environment, but also you as our passenger.
