Sustainability and the economyTravelling through the world you live in

London, Brussel, Amsterdam

If you extrapolate up from one passenger to the 25 million annual Railteam passengers expected in 2010, then the time and productivity benefits for one person become a benefit for the whole economy. If you combine all the positive impacts (from time saving to local regeneration) then the overall economic benefit can be up to 3% of gross domestic product (GDP) in the most affected regions.

Do you support the wider economy?

Mobility is important for the economy. Moving skills around, allowing certain areas to specialise and encouraging trade mobility in Europe is a backbone of growth, and high speed rail underpins that mobility.

High speed rail isn’t always a competitor for car and air travel. Moving passengers onto high speed rail can actually benefit car and air travel. On the road network, it could lead to reduced congestion resulting in quicker and less stressful journeys. On the conventional rail network, reduced crowding could mean improvements in productivity on the train. Replacing short-haul flights with HSR services is likely to result in more long-haul flights, as valuable landing slots are released at congested airports.

Do you support job creation?

Railteam members employ at least 500,000 people across Europe in a variety of jobs, and that number is set to grow. It’s important to Railteam members that this employment is both fair and socially responsible.
